Let’s Talk About The Healthiest Sunscreen Alternative (and How To Choose & Use One)

We are right in the midst of the sultry season and oh boy, we could not be happier!

Of course taking care of your skin does become more of a priority now than ever thanks to those UV rays that can speed up the signs of aging and contribute to skin damage.

Sure, we all love a golden glow, but exposing your unprotected limbs to hours of sun is not the way to do it. Even though you may not see the damage now, give it a few years and it will start to manifest in the form of lines and wrinkles that are a lot harder to reverse than they are to prevent in the first place.

Of course this is not the only reason you should be liberally applying your SPF; it’s there to help protect you against skin cancer too.

In today’s post we wanted to let you in on some tips and tricks when it comes to sunscreen so you can be sure you are fully protected and ready to enjoy the rest of your summer!

Consider a mineral SPF

Mineral is best according to dermatologists, and not only for your skin but for our coral reefs too!

Made with natural ingredients such as zinc and titanium, mineral sunscreens sit on the surface of the skin where they deflect the sun’s rays and are better for people with sensitive skin too.

So apart from the fact that mineral sunscreens are better for your health and our beautiful oceans, it’s agreed that they provide better skin protection as well.

SPF 30 or higher is best

Anything less than 30 will not provide adequate protection and anything higher really works the same as SPF 30. SPF 30 has been clinically proven to protect against, as well as minimize the harmful effects of sunlight.

Do reapply every couple of hours

This tip comes into play if you will be swimming or sweating heavily. A dime-sized dollop for the face and a shot-glass size for the body will usually get the job done and ensure you are fully lathered up.

Don’t forget these commonly neglected areas

We often spend so much time rubbing sunscreen into those big areas; our arms, legs, torso that we forget other areas that need it just as much, if not more!

Our ears, hands and lips are all areas that we tend to neglect. For your lips look for a natural lip balm with SPF protection.

We hope these tips will help you to ensure your skin is fully protected as you get out there and soak up the rays and all those adventurous activities!

  • I have found searching for the BABY versions of sunscreen are almost always the zinc based lotions…they were incredibly difficult to find 20 years ago when my sons were little, thankfully they are much easier to find today…we all still use them.

  • Great article Kama! Yes, zinc and titanium physical sunblocks are definitely the way to go for broad spectrum protection against UV-a and UV-b rays. Avoid chemical sunscreen for the reasons you mention. Studies have actually shown you can get systemic absorption of the chemical based sunblocks as well as damage to our water supply and reefs! By putting on a good anti-oxidant skincare product on your skin first, you can actually double the sun protection duration and effectiveness of your sunblock! And remember, when you are exposed to the aging UV-a rays of the sun, that damage doesn’t show up in your skin for almost 20 years! So when you notice aging in you skin, it’s typically from the unprotected sun exposure you got 20 years ago. Just say no to baby oil!
